PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon women's basketball team, released its 2016-17 regular season schedule on Tuesday. The schedule highlights contests against four teams who appeared in the 2016 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship, including Final Four participant Washington as well as Idaho, Hawaii and WAC-rival New Mexico State.
GCU will also travel to perennial powerhouse Duke and will host their first NCAA Final Four finalist in program history as they welcome Washington to GCU Arena come December. The Lopes will play host to 15 contests and travel to 13 games this season. GCU will also meet two or more programs from the Power Five conferences for the fourth-straight year.
Trent May enters into his 10th season as GCU head coach and will open the season at home for the fifth straight year against Alcorn State, on Friday, Nov. 11. In their first road game of year, GCU will meet the Duke Blue Devils on Thursday, Nov. 17 at its historic Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. where GCU assistant coach
Krystal Thomas played for three years and earned NCAA All-American Honors. Five days later GCU will land in Houston, Texas to matchup against the Rice Owls on Tuesday, Nov. 22 before returning home to host the Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 25 and 26. The Lopes will welcome Denver and 2016 NCAA Tourney participant in Idaho to GCU arena.
"I believe our schedule this year is competitive and challenging," May said. "Once again, we play top caliber teams in the country. We get to showcase great basketball in Phoenix playing Washington, a NCAA Final Four team in GCU Arena."
GCU will close out the month of November at UC Riverside and return home for a three game home stand to start off December. On Thursday, Dec. 1 the Lopes will welcome storied Pac 12 program Washington to GCU Arena. Three days later GCU will face off against Florida Atlantic on Sunday, Dec. 4 and will wrap up the three-game stint on Saturday, Dec. 10 against Cal Poly. The Lopes head back on the road to meet Southern Utah on Friday, Dec. 16 and then return home to host in-state rival Northern Arizona on Monday, Dec.19.
Following Christmas, the Lopes will bring in 2017 in Hawaii as they head to Honolulu for a five day road trip and will meet Hawaii for the third time in four seasons on Thursday, Dec. 29. They will play their first contest at Hawaii, after previously hosting the Rainbow Wahine in 2015-16 and 2013-14 seasons. GCU will round out their time in the islands at Chaminade on New Year's Eve where they hold a 14-0 all-time record before returning home. To finish out the non-conference schedule the Lopes will host their first contest of 2017 with a matchup against Arizona Christian on Wednesday, Jan. 4 before starting conference action.
GCU will debut Western Athletic Conference play in Orem, Utah as they meet Utah Valley on Saturday, Jan 7. They will return home to meet 2016 WAC Tournament Champions, New Mexico State on Thursday, Jan.12 and will close out the home slate against UTRGV on Saturday, Jan. 14.
"Our conference keeps getting better and from game one of our schedule to the end we will have to be ready to compete," May added. "When it is all said and done it will be exciting to see where we stand."
The following weekend GCU heads to Seattle U on Saturday, Jan. 21 before returning home to host the second pair of conference contests against UMKC on Thursday Jan. 26 and Chicago State a few days later on Saturday, Jan. 28. The final month of the regular season begins with the Lopes traveling to Cal State Bakersfield on Feb.4, UTRGV and New Mexico State on Feb. 9 and 11, respectively. Following the three-game road trip the Lopes return home to meet Seattle U and Utah Valley on Feb. 16 and 18. In the final road trip of the season, GCU will head to the Midwest to meet Chicago State and UMKC on Feb. 23 and 25.
The Lopes will finish at home for the second straight season and the third time in the last four years as they host Senior Day on Saturday, March 4 and meet CSUB for the 19th time in team history.
