GREELEY, Colo. – Grand Canyon baseball closed out its three-game series with Northern Colorado at Jackson Field. The Lopes struggled at the plate as Northern Colorado came away with the 6-2 win. GCU drops to 22-24-1 and 10-11 in the WAC.
Starting pitcher,
Tyler Wyatt, was solid as the only pitcher for GCU on Sunday, but was plagued by five runs in the second inning. Other than the second inning, Wyatt allowed just one run off just five hits, tying a career high going 8.0 innings and set a career-high with six strikeouts.
Northern Colorado cashed in on five runs in the second inning, jumping out to an early lead. Wyatt was able to get two outs but the Bears drew a walk to score the first run of the game and Dean Lawson hit a bases clearing double to extend UNC's lead 4-0. Cole Maltese added the fifth run of the inning.
After pitching on the mound, Wyatt also had an impact at the plate, bringing in the Lopes first run of the ball game. With runners on the corners in the top of the sixth, Wyatt singled to the shortstop, scoring Lerouge for Wyatt's 22nd RBI of the season. GCU would score in back-to-back innings after scoring in the sixth, GCU would add another run in the seventh. After moving back into the leadoff spot in GCU's lineup,
Thomas Lerouge picked up his 24th RBI of the season in the seventh with a single up the middle, scoring
Jared McDonald to make it a 6-2 ball game.
The Lopes return home for a three-game series at Brazell Stadium against WAC opponent Sacramento State. The Lopes will face the Hornets starting on Friday, May 13.
