GREELEY, Colo. – Grand Canyon baseball kicked off its three-game series with Northern Colorado (13-25) at Jackson Field. It was an up and down game for the Lopes (22-22-1) as there were three lead changes but the Lopes fell to the Bears 11-7.
The Bears got off to a great start in the first inning, scoring three runs, taking the early 3-0 lead but GCU quickly responded in the top of the second, plating two runs. After singles by
Greg Saenz and
Zach Malis the freshman,
Tyler Wyatt, stepped up with a double to the left field wall, scoring Saenz and Malis to cut UNC's lead 3-2.
After the top of the third inning ended, the game was delayed due to lightning in the area. After an hour and 22 minute delay, Vorhof came in for relief for Brendel. Northern Colorado quickly jumped on the Lopes, with a two-run homerun to extend UNC's lead 5-2. Once again, it didn't take long for the Lopes to respond, scoring five runs in the fourth inning.
Jared McDonald singled to center, to record his 13th RBI of the season, bringing in Wyatt. After
Ben Mauseth reached on an error, the bases were loaded for
Austin Bull and the freshman delivered with a bases clearing double to take a 6-5 lead over the Bears. GCU ended the inning with another run as
Thomas Lerouge singled to bring in Bull for the 7-5 lead.
Northern Colorado regained the lead after two runs in the fifth to tie the game and scoring a run in the sixth for the 8-7 lead. UNC added insurance in the eighth inning with a three-run homerun to give UNC the 11-7 lead. Allen Cook came in for relief for Northern Colorado and would throw 5.2 scoreless innings to give the Bears the 11-7 win.
GCU and Northern Colorado's game on Saturday, May 7, has been moved up to 9 a.m. (AZ Time) due to weather conditions.
