GREELEY, Colo. – Grand Canyon baseball faced off against Northern Colorado, in an early 10 a.m. local start in Game 2 of the series. The Lopes scored nine runs in the first four innings but the Bears rallied to come from behind for the 10-9 win. GCU drops to 22-23-1 and 10-10 in the WAC.
It was a chilly start at first pitch in Greeley at 54 degrees with 14 mph winds but the bats were hot for the Lopes in the second inning scoring five runs.
Zach Malis got GCU on the scoreboard with a single to bring in Schwartz for his 20th RBI of the season. In his 14th hit of the season,
Jared McDonald would record his 14th RBI of the season, singling up the middle to bring in Malis to give GCU the 2-0 lead.
Putting the exclamation point on the second inning was freshman
Marc Mumper, who returned to his home state, earning his fourth start of the season. The Colorado native made his presence known immediately with a three-run home run out to left field for his first career home run at GCU to end the second inning with a 5-0 lead.
GCU added two more runs in the next inning due to smart base running by Schwartz and Smith, forcing the Northern Colorado shortstop to make an error, scoring both runners, extending GCU's lead to 7-0. The Lopes would for the third straight inning with two more runs in the fourth inning.
Thomas Lerouge picked up his 23rd RBI of the season after doubling down the right field line, scoring
Austin Bull and Schwartz would bring in Bull on a groundout for his 31st RBI of the year.
The Bears wouldn't go quietly as they continued to chip away at GCU's lead in the latter innings. After trailing 9-1 heading into the sixth inning, the Bears scored four runs in the sixth inning, cutting the Lopes' lead to 9-5. UNC capitalized off GCU's errors, committing four in the game. Northern Colorado added three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to trail by one run heading into the ninth.
After a double to tie the game in the ninth from Dan Lawson, Cole Maltese would single up the middle to bring in Lawson for the game-winning run. GCU and Northern Colorado will close out the series on Sunday, May 8, with first pitch set for noon at Jackson Field.
