PHOENIX, Ariz. - Grand Canyon scored a run in each of the first six innings of the ballgame to cruise to a 10-5 victory over Chicago State in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. The Lopes recorded 10 runs on 12 hits to win their second straight WAC series. With the win, head coach
Andy Stankiewicz picked up his 150th career win as head coach of GCU baseball. GCU improves to 21-20-1 this season and 10-8 in the WAC.
"Anytime you get a win on Sunday and win the series it is a good day," pitching coach
Nathan Choate said. "Guys did a much better job today, sticking with their approach and we were able to put some runs on the board."
In a first inning that featured three combined runs, Chicago State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Two runs scored on a deep hit to left-center field that rolled all the way to the outfield wall. GCU didn't wait long for a rebuttal, however, with the first two batters reaching on base hits. The Lopes scored their first run of the game when
Austin Bull came in to score on a second consecutive wild pitch by Cougars' starter Josh Willis.
Not fazed by the early deficit, the Lopes jumped all over Chicago State with four runs in the second inning. After
Tyler Wyatt drew a leadoff walk, the Cougars booted consecutive sacrifice bunt attempts to load up the bases for GCU.
Marc Mumper and
Thomas Lerouge logged back-to-back RBI singles to tie and take the lead. Another bases-loaded walk and run-scoring double play capped off the four-run frame.
"He (Wyatt) was more locked in offensively than he was on the mound," Choate jokingly said about his starting pitcher. "We expect a lot out of him and he gave us another opportunity to win."
Wyatt helped his cause in the third inning by doubling to the right-center, scoring
Zach Malis who opened the inning with a single, and extending GCU's lead to 6-2.
Garrison Schwartz tagged on another run with his team-leading sixth home run of the year in the fourth inning, homering in back-to-back games for the first time in his career.
Chicago State threatened to slash GCU's advantage, loading the bases with nobody out in the top of the fifth. Grand Canyon got out of the inning with just one run of damage though, drawing two ground balls and picking off a baserunner.
The Lopes kept their streak of scoring in every inning alive in the home-half of the fifth. Mumper drew a walk, went first to third on a Lerouge single, and scored on Bull's second hit of the day. The Lopes scored in the sixth after Malis drew a walk and scored on Wyatt's second double of the afternoon.
Wyatt picked up his second collegiate victory, one week after winning his first game. The right-hander was busy through his five innings of work, tossing 92 pitches. Wyatt, however, limited the Cougars to four hits and three runs, striking out two.
"I just tried to go out there and stay relaxed," Wyatt said about his approach on the mound. "It felt like high school out there today because it felt good to hit and pitch within the same game. I feel that it keeps me more focused by analyzing what their pitcher is doing and focusing on where my pitches need to be."
The Lopes have a quick turnaround as they are set for five games this upcoming week starting off with a two-game series on the road against San Jose State starting on Tuesday, May 3 and ending with a three-game series against Northern Colorado.
