SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Grand Canyon baseball team began a five-game road trip against San Jose State with an extra-inning victory on Tuesday night. It didn't come easy as the Spartans plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, but GCU was able to come out on top with five runs in the 10th inning to win 10-5.
"That was an exciting baseball game," pitching coach
Nathan Choate said. "It was a tale of two different games. Early on it was a pitcher's duel and then it got a little more offensive. The good thing is how we responded."
After San Jose State developed some momentum going into extra innings, GCU quickly turned the tide. The Lopes sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the 10th to retake the lead. On a passed ball,
Matt Haggerty scored the go-ahead run to grant GCU a 6-5 lead. After that, the Lopes continued to pour it on. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Garrison Schwartz's first hit of the night could not have come at a more optimal moment, doubling to left-center and clearing the bases to run his RBI count to 30 on the season. Wyatt would single in the next at bat, scoring Schwartz to end the 10th with a 10-5 GCU lead. A.J. Franks spun a 1-2-3 home-half of the 10th to log his second win of the season.
Three Grand Canyon batters logged multi-hit efforts, led by a three-hit game from
Brandon Smith.
Jared McDonald and
Greg Saenz also picked up a pair of hits.
"I was hoping for that win in the ninth inning," Saenz said. "Things went a little south for a bit but I knew we'd hop back on it. I was just trying to get a pitch to hit all night and that's the way it worked out."
The Lopes were able to get runners on base early in the ballgame with five runners on base in the first two innings, but GCU was unable to bring anyone home. San Jose State took advantage of GCU not capitalizing early in the game as Brendt Citta hit a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
In his fifth start of the season, freshman
Jake Wong gave the Lopes 5.1 solid innings, allowing just two runs off six hits. The Lopes started a comeback in the sixth inning when Smith doubled to left advancing Saenz to third base. With runners in scoring position, McDonald singled to right field, scoring Saenz to trail SJSU by just one run.
GCU continued to battle and show discipline at the plate and in the top of the eighth, the Lopes cashed in, scoring four runs on three hits and two Spartan errors.
The teams will reconvene at San Jose Municipal Stadium on Wednesday as GCU will look to win its third straight. First pitch between the Lopes and the Spartans is set for 6 p.m. MST and will be available on the GCU Radio Network.
