SEATTLE – Grand Canyon baseball continued its three-game series with Seattle U on Saturday at Bannerwood Park. The Lopes struggled to bring in runners on base as they fell to the Redhawks 4-1. GCU is now 15-18 this season and 4-7 overall in the WAC.
GCU went 3-16 with runners on base and 0-6 with runners in scoring position.
"When things aren't going well, players put too much pressure on themselves and that happened today," head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "We need to relax and let the hits come to us because we are putting too much pressure on ourselves."
The Lopes were able to get runners on base to start the game but stranded seven runners in the first four innings. After a home run in the bottom of the first inning, Seattle U would score in back-to-back innings to take the 2-0 lead after two innings.
After the first two innings, GCU's
Jake Repavich settled down nicely throwing 6.1 innings throwing five strikeouts while allowing two runs. After the first two innings, Repavich was solid in his outing, throwing 4.1 scoreless innings.
GCU jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth with runners on the corners. Grant Gunning came in for relief for Nick Meservey and would throw a wild pitch, scoring
Austin Bull to cut Seattle's lead to just one run. The Redhawks have found success in the eighth in two games against the Lopes, scoring six runs. On Saturday, Seattle scored two runs in the eighth to make it a 4-1 game in the Redhawks favor.
"Everybody wants to pick the team up since we are in a funk," Stankiewicz added. "We are trying to do too much on offense so it will get better and the guys will pick themselves up."
GCU will close out its three-game series against the Redhawks on Sunday, April 17, at Bannerwood Park at noon.
