PHOENIX – The Lopes men's volleyball team continues MIVA conference play this weekend with two matchups against the McKendree University Bearcats. Grand Canyon will face the Bearcats on Friday, March 11 and again on Saturday, March 12. GCU is currently 10-8 overall and 3-5 in the MIVA.
"Every conference weekend is vitally important for us," head coach
Matt Werle began. "McKendree has been improving leaps and bounds each year and they are doing some very good things right now. We are coming off of a very big win and plan to progress and push further forward."
Last weekend, Grand Canyon split matches with No. 8 Ball State. The Cardinals won the first match in five sets but the Lopes returned the favor to win the second match in five sets on Saturday night. It was a marquee win for the program and Coach Werle and the Lopes are looking to keep the momentum rolling against McKendree.
The Bearcats are 5-7 this year and 3-5 in the MIVA. They are led by head coach Nickie Sanlin who is entering her third season at the helm. Outside hitter Jared Wilcox leads the McKendree offense with 131 kills this season while libero Zach Thompson has 106 digs to pace the defense.
During the 2015 season, GCU defeated the Bearcats twice. The Lopes beat McKendree in four sets in the first matchup and then swept them in three sets on the following night. Senior
Gerrard Lipscombe paced the Lopes offensively during both matches last season.
Lipscombe has continued his efficient play this season and leads GCU with 182 kills this year while
Shalev Saada is second on the team with 134.
Ashton King paces the attack from the middle with 113 kills and 70 blocks. Setter
Michael Milstein has emerged as a leader and has 515 assists for the season.
"The practice gym was very competitive today," Werle noted. "The plan is to keep practice highly intense for the rest of the week."
After thriving with an electric crowd last weekend, the Lopes look forward to having another great turnout and maintaining the same team intensity. Both matches will be played at Antelope Gym and begin at 6 p.m.
