Trent May has been recognized as one of the best coaches in college basketball as the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) was given the honor of being a 2016 WBCA Victory Club Award recipient.
"It's a blessing to be a part of this game and to have coached so many great people," May said. "I have had great assistants along the way and the combination of them and talented players make all of this possible. The Lord has blessed my life in so many ways and I am certainly blessed to be a coach."
The award is given to WBCA-members that are head coaches that have achieved career wins of 200, 300, 400, 500 or more during the current season. May reached a milestone in his career this season notching his 300th win under his belt on January 16, 2016 on the road against Utah Valley.
In 2000, May got his first shot at being a head coach at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., and he took full advantage of his opportunity. May averaged over 21 wins per season in six seasons at Bethany, including a 30-win season in the 2002-03 campaign.
May has continued his success at Grand Canyon as he holds the most wins in Grand Canyon women's basketball history with 180 wins, nearly four times as many wins as the second-winningest coach, Julie Hanks. May has recorded four seasons with 20 or more wins and has a winning percentage of .676.
The Lopes made a return to the postseason for the second time in three years after finishing in third place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 16-15 record. The Lopes went 8-6 in the WAC, ending the regular season winning four of their last five games.
Founded in 1981, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as a sport for women and girls.
