PHOENIX – Looking to halt a two-game skid, the Grand Canyon women's basketball team will have six days to prepare for a Saturday matchup vs. Seattle U at GCU Arena. It will mark the third time this season that the Lopes have had a stretch of three or more games at home, previously going 2-0 in the final games of these extended home stands.
Grand Canyon dropped a pair of games last week to the WAC leaders in New Mexico State and UT Rio Grande Valley. The WAC-leading Aggies controlled Thursday's matchup from start to finish, cruising to a victory over the Lopes. On Saturday, GCU mounted a furious comeback, scoring 29 points in the fourth quarter. But what would have been the game-winning shot at the final buzzer was off the mark and UTRGV emerged as two-point victors. In the New Mexico State game,
Jessica Gajewski was the only GCU player in double figures with 10 points.
Dana Jones put forth an impressive stat line of 26 points / 10 rebounds in Saturday's contest.
The Redhawks roll into Phoenix having lost a season-high-tying four straight games and will be looking to right the ship vs. the Lopes. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. It is the fifth-to-last game of the regular season, third-to-last home game and the third and final Cox 7 Arizona broadcast of the season. Barry Buetel (play-by-play), Scott Williams (analysis) and Kate Longworth (sideline) will have the call on Cox 7 and cox7.com/live with a 3:30 p.m. pregame show.
Scouting Seattle USeattle U enters Saturday's game with the longest active losing streak in the Western Athletic Conference at four games, including a loss to Grand Canyon in Seattle on Jan. 30. Last weekend, the Redhawks suffered two trivial losses to the teams at the bottom of the standings (Chicago State, UMKC) as they have watched their record go from 3-2 in conference play to 3-6. Amid the four losses, Seattle U has not shot 40.0 percent from the field nor eclipsed the 55-point mark. While they are one of the top-two assisting and 3-point shooting teams in the conference, they allow the most points at 67.9 points per game. Taelor Ross (12.4 ppg) ranks fourth in the WAC in scoring while Kaylee Best (2.4 steals per game) ranks second in the conference behind
Courtney Hayes.
