PHOENIX – After two doubles titles for the Grand Canyon women's tennis team on the second day of the GCU Invitational, the Lopes were able to follow up on the final day with two titles in singles play. GCU's
Lana Rinaldi and
Celina Buhr came away with wins in their respective championship match to close out the first ever on-campus invitational at the GCU Tennis Facility.
"I am very happy with the end results for our first ever intercollegiate competition on campus," head coach
Gregory Prudhomme said. "The ladies battled hard all weekend and displayed great attitudes from Friday all the way to today."
The Lopes could not have been any more dominant in the No. 2 Singles Flight earning first, second and third place. In the championship match, Buhr would face teammate and doubles partner
Lana Rinaldi and the freshman would win her first fall tournament title with a 6-4, 7-6 (2) victory. To take home third place,
Emilia Occhipinti defeated New Mexico State's Lindsey Harlas 6-1, 6-3.
In the No. 3 Singles Flight,
Marie Deleval would face NAU's Hailey Rochin in a battle for the crown championship. Deleval was consistent throughout the entire match and pulled out straight 6-4 sets to come away with the title. The win capped off a perfect 3-0 weekend in singles for Deleval.
"We played a lot of three-setters throughout the weekend, which is tough but I feel like they maintained their composure," Prudhomme added. "The competition was tough but we set high goals because we want to start receiving national recognition and earn national vote. We are on the right track and this tournament showed that."
The GCU Invitational was the final tournament for the women in the fall season and will return to action for their spring schedule beginning in January at UC Irvine.
