PHOENIX – The basketball season is officially underway as the Grand Canyon men's and women's basketball programs hosted their annual Midnight Madness event to tip off the season. Grand Canyon University got its first look at the men's and women's basketball teams as over 7,000 fans piled into GCU Arena to welcome their Lopes for the 2016-17 season.
"I cannot thank our university enough for all the work they put into Midnight Madness," men's basketball head coach
Dan Majerle said. "To have 7,200 students rock the place makes it a special night for our players and staff. This is what we show our recruits and this is just a preview of what we will play in front of this season. This is as good of a Midnight Madness as there is in the country."
The support for GCU basketball was evident on the campus of Grand Canyon University as students began lining up at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon, waiting to cheer on their student-athletes to begin the season. Once the doors opened for the fans to enter GCU Arena, the show began as Thunder welcomed the crowd followed up by the Havocs starting the party.
The GCU cheer and dance team put on a show for the fans and after the GCU drumline pumped up the crowd, the basketball teams were introduced for the first time this season. Majerle and women's head coach
Trent May arrived in style as May roared in on a ATV and Majerle shook the arena coming in on a motorcycle.
"GCU's Midnight Madness is literally one of the coolest events in college sports. I know other places think their Midnight Madness is good but ours is great," May said. "Kudos to Taylor Griffin and the events staff at GCU who just simply know how to throw a great party and kick off the basketball season in great fashion."
All eyes are now set on the start of the season as the men will play in an exhibition game against Adams State on Thursday, Nov. 3, at GCU Arena before starting the season on the road against Duke. The women will also have an exhibition game at home against Western State Colorado on Tuesday, Nov. 8, before tipping off the season against Alcorn State at home.
