EDINBURG – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball fell to UTRGV 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 on Saturday afternoon on the Vaqueros campus.
The Lopes were led by
Jordyn Sanchez who finished with a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs.
Randahl Powers finished with five kills while
Maria Adams added four kills.
Heidi Carpenter added 27 assists and six digs.
Chloe Jenkins led the Lopes with 11 digs.
GCU and UTRGV went back and forth early with the Lopes taking an 8-7 lead after a Sanchez kill. With Carpenter serving, Powers sent down a free ball to give GCU a 13-12 advantage. GCU led 15-14 at the media timeout after Sanchez sent down her sixth kill of the set. A Powers ace opened up an 18-15 GCU lead. The Vaqueros went on a 6-2 run to retake the lead at 21-20, forcing the Lopes to call timeout. GCU would pull within 22-21, but the Vaqueros would pull out the set 25-21.
The Vaqueros opened the second set on a 7-2 run. GCU stormed back to pull within 9-7 after forcing a pair of UTRGV errors. Carpenter served up an ace late to pull GCU within 22-19, but UTRGV held off the Lopes 25-21.
In the third set, UTRGV scored the first four points of the set. GCU rallied to tie the set at 6-6 after a Sanchez kill. Tied at 11-11, UTRGV broke through to take a 15-12 advantage at the media timeout. Down 18-12 the Lopes cut the deficit down to four, but the Vaqueros pulled out the 25-16 win.
GCU returns home next week for a pair of WAC matches against UMKC and Chicago State.
