PHOENIX - After claiming a victory in a back-and-forth first set, the Grand Canyon women's volleyball team ultimately fell to Utah Valley 3-1 in Antelope Gym on Saturday afternoon. The Lopes won the first set 25-23 before the Wolverines rebounded to claim the match.
Heidi Carpenter logged her second double-double of the season (34 assists, 10 digs),
Katrice Pond led the Lopes with 13 kills, and
Emily Christensen recorded seven blocks.
Grand Canyon got the match off on the right track with two early kills from
Randahl Powers and single kills from
Leigh Stonerook and
Hannah Hicks. The Lopes grabbed early leads as big as three before Utah Valley gained leads as large as five. Trailing 20-16 late in the match, three consecutive blocks pulled GCU within a point and forced a Utah Valley timeout. It was a back-and-forth set from there on out, with ties coming at 20, 21, and 22. But with a service ace and a Utah Valley service error, Grand Canyon emerged victorious from the first set, 25-23.
Powers led the Lopes' attack in the first set with five kills, followed by Pond with three. Utah Valley outhit GCU with a .344 in the first set, but Grand Canyon used a pair of service aces to help its cause.
The Lopes turned their momentum into a hot start in the second set, scoring the first three points. The Wolverines quickly rebounded to take a small lead, capitalizing on attacking errors by the Lopes. Again using an impressive run in the middle of the set, the Wolverines took an 18-14 lead. But the Lopes rattled off six consecutive points highlighted by back-to-back blocks by Christensen to take a 20-18 lead. Amid the hot stretch for Grand Canyon, Utah Valley was forced to burn both of its timeouts. In a finish that nearly mirrored the first set, both clubs traded points in a tightly-contested, often-tied end of the set. Following a 23-23 tie, the Wolverines closed out the set with two finishing points to even the match at one set apiece.
Pond had an impressive second set with seven kills, while Pond and Christensen teamed up for three blocks in the set. Both teams' attacks struggled, with Utah Valley hitting .167 and the Lopes hitting .087 in the set.
Utah Valley gained control of the match with a commanding 25-9 win in the third set and a 25-12 win in the decisive fourth set. The Wolverines committed just one attacking error in the third compared to 11 for the Lopes.
Next up, the Lopes will host CSU Bakersfield on Friday in Antelope Gym before taking to the road. The match is set to get underway at 6 p.m.
