The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to CSU Bakersfield 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 on Friday night in Antelope Gym.
GCU was competitive in the match but each time the Roadrunners answered to hold off the Lopes.
GCU was led by
Heidi Carpenter with a double-double. The freshman setter had 19 assists and 10 digs, adding three kills for the Lopes.
Katrice Pond led GCU with 13 kills while
Jordyn Sanchez added seven kills.
Gracie Dimond,
Hannah Hicks and Sanchez each had two blocks.
Bakersfield was led by Carol Grasso with 12 kills while Marina Sanches added 11 kills and five blocks.
In the first set, CSUB took a 6-3 lead in the early going, but GCU stormed back to take a 10-9 lead after a Dimond and Carpenter block. GCU led 16-15 after a Sanchez kill. From that point, CSUB scored four of the next five points to open up a 19-16 edge. GCU pulled within 20-19 after a Dimond kill but CSUB held off the Lopes for the 25-21 win.
GCU scored the first four points of the second set on a Carpenter service run. CSUB came through with a run to turn a 7-3 deficit into a 10-7 CSUB lead. The Lopes hung around and were within 16-14 and later 24-21 forcing the Roadrunners to call a timeout late. CSUB got the final point to win 25-21.
In the third set with the score tied at 6-6, CSUB scored four straight points to open a four point lead. GCU pulled within 17-15 after a
Chloe Jenkins ace. GCU was later within 20-18 after Pond sent one through the block. CSUB ended the set on a 7-2 run to hold off GCU.
GCU drops to 4-16, 0-8 Western Athletic Conference while CSUB improves to 8-13, 5-3 WAC.
GCU is back in action next week when it travels to New Mexico State and UTRGV.
