The 13-2 GCU men's basketball team opens up Western Athletic Conference play looking to extend their winning streak to a season-best seven games as they take on the University of Texas Rio Grand Valley Vaqueros on Thursday, Jan. 7 , 2016 at Grand Canyon University Arena.
It will be the fifth matchup between the two schools all-time, with the Lopes holding a 3-1 advantage in the previous four meetings between the two teams. In the last meeting between the Lopes and Vaqueros (formerly the UTPA Broncs), Joshua Braun led GCU with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks as the Lopes used a 14-2 run to close the game to turn a 7 point deficit with just over three minutes to play into a five-point victory.
UTRGV enters Thursday's game in Phoenix at 4-11, fresh off snapping a six-game losing streak with an 89-81 win over Our Lady of the Lake. The Vaqueros shot a season-best .569 from the field as five players reached double-figures, led by Dakota Slaughter scoring a career-high 22 points, including 5-of-8 three pointers. J.J. Thompson added 19 points while Antonio Green posted the first double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. Shaquille Hines leads the Vaqueros in scoring on the season, averaging 14.7 points per game.
Head coach Dan Majerle's crew is coming off their ninth home win of the season as they took down Bethune-Cookman 74-53 on Sunday night. WAC Player of the Week Grandy Glaze led the Lopes with 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field while grabbing 8 boards. Three other Lopes finished in double figures as Dominic Magee scored 13 and Braun and DeWayne Russell each added 12 points in the win.
"I thought we did a good job of staying patient and recognizing, sharing the ball -- 19 assists -- shot the ball well, rebounded the basketball well," Majerle said. "Overall, a very good win. Sometimes you can get off a long road trip and come home and there can be a letdown. That didn't happen for us. Very proud of our guys. We ended up 13-2 in non-conference schedule. Now our conference starts. We've been working towards this, our guys are excited. I couldn't be happier with the ways our guys have performed thus far."
The Lopes will continue conference play on Saturday, Jan. 9 as they host four-time defending conference champion New Mexico State at "blacked out" GCU Arena. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
