PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon men's basketball team kicked off 2016 in impressive fashion as they took down the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 74-53. The Antelopes are now 13-2 on the season and have won six games in a row.
"Good win. Coming off the road, playing a team like that who is going to change defenses and kind of mix it up," head coach Dan Majerle said. "I thought we did a good job of staying patient and recognizing, sharing the ball -- 19 assists -- shot the ball well, rebounded the basketball well."
Grandy Glaze put on a clinic in the post by scoring 20 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. He was 10-13 from the floor and the Wildcats felt his presence in the paint the whole night.
Joshua Braun and
DeWayne Russell each added 12 points for the game. The Lopes were able to dominate the boards outrebounding Bethune-Cookman 38-23 as five players recorded four or more rebounds.
The Lopes battled Bethune-Cookman to a 10-10 tie going into the first media timeout then exploded with a 16-2 run over the next eight minutes. Glaze led GCU at half with 10 points and 6 rebounds while Joshua Braun chipped in two three-pointers for 6 points and 3 rebounds. Going into halftime, GCU held a 36-22 lead.
Dominic Magee found his touch in the game as he knocked down a season-high 3 three-pointers and scored 13 points to lead all players off the bench along with four rebounds and four assists.
"I was able to shoot better tonight and I give all the credit to the coaches," said Magee. "I have been staying after practice to work on my shot so now I am seeing the results on the court."
In the second half, GCU outscored Bethune-Cookman 38-31 and were again led by Glaze with 10 points. The Lopes recorded 19 assists for the game and moved the ball well throughout the second half. Matt Jackson turned in a solid performance in his first start and contributed 7 points and 6 rebounds. Grand Canyon shot 53.4% from the floor and held a 38-23 rebounding advantage.
"Overall a very good win. Sometimes you can get off a long road trip and come home and there can be a letdown. That didn't happen for us. Very proud of our guys," Majerle said. "We ended up 13-2 in non-conference schedule. Now our conference starts. We've been working towards this, our guys are excited. I couldn't be happier with the ways our guys have performed thus far.? The Lopes next game is on Thursday, Jan. 7 against Texas Rio Grand Valley. This matchup will begin Western Athletic Conference play and will be held at GCU Arena at 7 p.m.
