PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon women's basketball team heads right back out on to the road this week for a pair of WAC contests. GCU sits at 2-3 and is in the thick of a tight race in the middle of the WAC standings, with four teams within a game of third place. GCU pays a visit to two of those teams this week, with a Thursday game vs. CSU Bakersfield (5-15, 2-3 WAC) before heading to the Northwest for a game with Seattle U (9-11, 3-2 WAC) on Saturday.
The Lopes completed a split in their first two home conference games with a sizeable victory over Chicago State on Thursday before allowing UMKC to come from behind and win on Sunday.
Courtney Hayes continued her stretch of dominance with 14 assists on Thursday and a career-high (by far) 23-point performance on 11-of-17 shooting on Sunday.
Dana Jones logged her second career double-double, with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Both games are available on the WAC Digital Network with game times scheduled for 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., respectively.
Scouting CSU BakersfieldThe Roadrunners are struggling to follow-up last year's 23-9 overall record and second-place finish in the WAC, as CSUB enters Thursday's game with a 5-15 record. CSU Bakersfield looked to be turning the corner just when conference play was rolling around, winning three of four games over UC Irvine, Chicago State and Seattle U. However, a difficult road trip to UT Rio Grande Valley and NM State last week has the Roadrunners on a two-game skid. CSUB has had an extremely difficult schedule thus far, playing five top-25 squads in non-conference. Batabe Zempare (10.8 ppg) leads CSU Bakersfield in scoring and leads the WAC in rebounding (9.2 rpg).
Scouting Seattle ULike CSUB, the Redhawks are also coming off of the toughest two-game swing the WAC has to offer this season, dropping a pair of games to New Mexico State and UT Rio Grande Valley. At 9-11, Seattle U is one win away from tying last season's win total. Earlier this month, Seattle U head coach Joan Bonvicini became just the 17th Division I women's basketball coach to reach the 700-win plateau. Seattle U is the WAC's top three-point shooting club (33.0 pecent) but features the last-placed scoring defense, allowing 69.1 ppg. Taelor Ross (12.6 ppg) ranks fourth in the conference in scoring, while Tal Sahar (40.7 percent) shoots from long range at a higher clip than anyone else in the WAC.
