OREM, Utah – The Lopes used a nine-point edge in the final period to defeat the Wolverines in come-from-behind fashion at Utah Valley on Saturday night. The win marked the Lopes' first conference victory of the year as well as head coach Trent May's 300th career win.
"A much-needed win tonight was earned by a bunch of hungry girls," May said. "There were some big moments by a few players tonight."
Tanesha Daniels – a native of Utah – logged GCU career highs of 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Lopes.
Courtney Hayes continues to distribute the ball effectively, dishing out a career-high 14 assists. The 14 assists was the most of any GCU player in the Lopes' three-year Division I history.
It was a tale of two vastly different quarters in the first half, with the opening quarter featuring 35 combined points compared to just 15 in the second quarter. The Lopes shot 47 percent in the first quarter including three three-pointers but were limited to just two made field goals in the second quarter.
Balanced first-half scoring included six points each from
Alyx Bloom and Daniels. Hayes continued her pace as the WAC's leading assister, recording eight assists in the first half alone.
After facing a 27-24 halftime deficit, the Lopes pulled three points closer over the course of the third period. Trailing 38-37 entering the final quarter, Grand Canyon used four made three-point shots to gain leads as large as nine. Bloom and Hayes sealed the deal with made free throws in the final minutes.
"Courtney had a GCU D1 record with 14 assists and Jessica Gajewski had four charges on defense," May said. "
Cheyenne Hedrington had a big second half and big 3's. Tanesha had a great overall game with a double-double."
The Lopes return to Phoenix for the first time in conference play, hosting Chicago State on Thursday, Jan. 21 and Missouri-Kansas City on Sunday, Jan. 24.
