Box Score (PDF) The Grand Canyon women's soccer team continued its five-match homestand on Friday night with a matchup against Oakland. The Antelopes scored two goals but it wasn't enough for the win as GCU tied Oakland 2-2. GCU moves to 2-1-1 this season.
"We knew this was going to be a tough game because Oakland has had a mixed bag of results to start the season," Head coach Stevie Gill said. "We need to clean some things up before conference but all-in-all I thought we scored a couple of good goals and had some fantastic spells throughout the match."
Oakland had a golden opportunity in the middle of the first half when Joan Sieja went one-on-one with GCU's goalkeeper Blakely Fraasch. To keep the score at 0-0, Fraasch ran out of the box to block Sieja's strike. Oakland would score in the 25
th minute with a goal from Jamie Home to give the Bears the 1-0 lead. Home would capitalize off a rebound from her first shot inside the box for the first goal of the game.
It was a physical first half with 15 total fouls, eight by Grand Canyon and seven by Oakland. GCU looked to find the right combination in the first 45 minutes playing 16 players compared to Oakland making only one substitution.
Grand Canyon came out with a new attitude in the second half and it didn't take long for the Antelopes to strike as McKenzie Cook would score her first career goal in the 48
th minute. Cook was able to control possession 25 yards outside the box where she blasted a shot in the opposite far post for her first goal as a Lope.
"It is awesome to finally score because I have been trying so hard every game," Cook said. "We have to keep looking for shots and fire them off when we have the opportunity and I think we did that tonight."
Play was delayed due to lightning in the area at the 52
nd minute of the second half for 30 minutes but when play resumed GCU didn't waste any time scoring in less than a minute from Cassie Beckwith. Kathryn Yancone crossed the ball from 40 yards out to the far post where Beckwith made her run and scored inside the box.
Nearly 20 minutes later Oakland would respond with a goal from Cecilie Dokka off a cross to tie the match at 2-2.
The match would head into overtime where both teams battled but nobody was able to get the golden goal as GCU tied its first match of the season.
Earning her first start of the season was senior Martine Gjennestad, playing 43 minutes in her return from injury. Shannon Costello saw playing time for the first time this season after recovering from injury in the backline for 25 minutes. Grand Canyon put up a season-high 18 shots, with seven coming from Cook.
"The main I am proud of is our effort and physicality tonight," Gill said. "We rebounded well after halftime and these are the small intangibles that will serve us well into the future."
The Lopes will wrap up their homestand on Sunday, Sept. 6, with a matchup against Alabama State. Kick off will begin at 1 p.m. at GCU Soccer Field.
