"All in all, just a great, gutsy team effort tonight," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "The kids did a nice job battling back and putting together some big at bats and big hits to keep it close and take the lead."
"We have been in these types of games before and that's why you come here," said Stankiewicz. "Having the guys play in a big environment like this and to be able to come back and not give up says a lot about them."
Texas Tech, who is outscoring opponents 40-7 in the first inning this season, continued their first-inning magic, striking for three runs in the opening frame to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.
GCU chipped away at the Red Raider lead in the top of the third, using a
Chad De La Guerra RBI single and
Brandon Smith RBI groundout to produce a pair of runs and cut the deficit to one.
The Lopes weren't done, as they scored twice in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.
Matt Haggerty and
Ben Mauseth both singled and came around to score on a wild pitch and a passed ball, respectively, to give GCU a one-run advantage.
Starter
Zebastian Valenzuela settled in nicely after surrendering three first-inning runs. Valenzuela shut out the Red Raiders through the next four innings, fanning a career-high eight batters.
Tech was able to manufacture a run in the eighth to knot the score at 4-4.
After neither team was able to produce a run in the ninth, it was senior De La Guerra delivering a RBI single to score
Paul Panaccione on what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the 10th.
Relief pitcher
Travis Garcia-Perreira (1-0), who pitched the final three innings, struck out the final two batters with runners on the corners en route to picking up his first-career win at GCU.
The Lopes will close out their 10-game road swing Wednesday with a 12 p.m. (Arizona Time) contest with the Red Raiders in Lubbock. The game can be found on the radio at KXXT 1010 AM (also via the KXXT TuneIn Radio App), the home of Antelope men's basketball and baseball. Live stats and a video link will be available at
