"Another good effort," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz." Obviously it was tight, it was good to see us stay on it and win innings seven, eight and nine. We put some good at bats together when we had to."
After Texas Tech pushed a run across in the top of the first, the Lopes answered with a run of their own in the top of the second.
Greg Saenz laced a two-out double to left center, scoring
Brandon Smith to knot the score at 1-1.
The Lopes put a three spot on the board in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 advantage, as
Chad De La Guerra highlighted the inning with an opposite field solo home run. It is the ninth home run of the season for the senior second baseman.
The Red Raiders scored a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 5-4 lead.
GCU rallied in the final two innings, scoring twice in the eighth and four times in the ninth to secure the 10-5 victory.
Ben Mauseth ripped a two-run double in the ninth, while
Garrison Schwartz and
Matt Haggerty both tallied RBI hits to produce Canyon's four runs.
Mick Vorhof (4-0) earned the win on the hill, tossing two innings in relief of starter
Ruben Rincon.
Cameron Brendel threw two shutout innings to pick up his second save of the season.
"The pitching staff did a good job," added Stankiewicz. "Rincon gave us a good three innings of work, Jaren and Mick came in and did a nice job. "Last couple of times he's (Cameron Brendel) pitched he's come in and pitched with some conviction and attacked the strike zone. We need that coming into the final three series."
GCU will return to Phoenix to welcome Seattle U for a three-game WAC series this weekend. The Lopes, who sit atop the conference standings, are a half-game ahead of the Redhawks. The three-game set will open with a 6:30 p.m. contest Friday at Brazell Stadium. Fans can visit
