The Grand Canyon University softball team capped off its final home weekend of the season in style, defeating Utah Valley, 15-3, in five innings Saturday night at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. En route to earning the sweep of UVU, GCU's offense exploded for 46 runs on the weekend.
"Great night and great weekend for the program," said head coach Ann Pierson. "I'm really happy for the seniors tonight."
GCU improves to 28-19 and 9-3 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), while UVU drops to 16-32 and 3-9 in league contests. The Antelopes sit in second place heading into next weekend's three-game set with WAC-leader New Mexico State (37-13, 11-1), two games back of the Aggies.
GCU honored its four seniors (
Kelsey Barak,
Kayla Henry,
Lauren Regester and
Haley Walker) prior to first pitch Saturday night.
"I don't think I could have scripted it (Senior Night) better," said Pierson. "To have all four seniors go in and make an impact on the game. Lauren's presence alone has an impact and she made some great plays. Kelsey made some great plays on defense and swung her bat well. Haley sets the tone and just does it all for us. I'm so happy for Kayla and proud of her. It was so special for her to be able to break the record at home on Senior Night in front of our home fans; everything about it was very special."
Henry's final game at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium was a memorable one, as the Tucson native dropped a two-run single into left field in the bottom of the third to become GCU's all-time career hits leader. Henry has now amassed 265 hits in her four-year career.
Big innings seemed to be the theme this weekend for the Lopes, as GCU topped yesterday's pair of 11-run frames with a 12-run first Saturday.
Camree Wartman highlighted the first-inning scoring with a grand slam over the right field fence—her second grand slam of the weekend. The sophomore finished the weekend with 12 RBI.
Leadoff hitter Haley Walker, who leads the WAC with her 69 hits on the season, added a pair of hits to continue on her team-best 14-game hitting streak. Wartman finished with two hits, while Barak recorded a base knock and tallied two RBI in her home finale.
Taylor Nowlin (13-6, 6-0 WAC) remained perfect in the circle in league games, as the left-hander fanned six and surrendered just three hits in 4.1 innings of work. Â
"We are going to go into a difficult situation next weekend at New Mexico State, but we know what is at stake for us and for them," concluded Pierson. "They have been playing well all year long and we definitely know it's going to be the toughest opponent we have seen. It's exciting to have the conference title come down to the final weekend."
The Lopes will travel to Las Cruces, N.M., to take on New Mexico State in their final series of the season. Fans can find the complete weekend schedule, as well as any live links to follow the action at
