SAN DIEGO – Seven fifth-inning runs for Grand Canyon turned a tight game into the Lopes' second consecutive run-rule very quickly Saturday at San Diego State.
GCU (43-5, 16-2 Mountain West) was trailing 2-0 heading into the fourth inning before they rolled off 11 runs in two innings en route to the 11-2 win.
Senior right hander
Taryn Batterton got the nod in the circle, only pitching 1 2/3 innings. After a pair of two-out walks in the bottom of the second inning, GCU head coach
Shanon Hays went with freshman reliever
Abi Jones. Even though Jones walked her first batter, she escaped the inning with a groundout back to the pitcher.
Jones allowed a two-run shot in the third to break the 0-0 tie and give GCU its first deficit of the series. Jones earned the win by finishing with two clean innings, including a perfect fifth for the run-rule win.
GCU junior catcher
Tinley Lucas continued her offensive surge in conference play when she powered out her seventh home run of the season to give the Lopes a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning. Lucas followed up freshman right fielder
Addison Shifflett's two-out RBI single, with the three-run "Tinley Tank."
Lucas finished the day with two hits and five RBIs, as she drove in another pair of runs in the fifth. Lucas has five homers and 19 RBIs in Mountain West play, including a team-best batting average of .436 in conference contests.
The fifth inning saw the floodgates open up for Grand Canyon's offense to notch its sixth straight conference win. Two walks and an error loaded the bases with two outs for senior designated player
Emily Gonzalez, who came through as she often does with a two-run single up the middle.
After another Shifflett single, Lucas drove in another pair to make the Lopes lead 8-2. A wild pitch and a walk later, it was sophomore third baseman
Ellie Pond's turn to join the fun. Pond ripped a line drive into left-center field. The ball shot off the top of the left-fielder's glove to score another two runs off the error for the 11-2 final score.
GCU scored all 11 of its runs with two outs, clutching up with six two-out hits during that time.
Grand Canyon is 16-2 in Mountain West, holding onto a three-game lead of first place with with seven games remaining. Nevada and UNLV also won the first two games of their series to each be 13-5 in conference play. The top two teams in the league earn first-round byes.
The Lopes have not dropped a conference game on the road this season, as they hope to continue that with a sweep of San Diego State on Sunday. First pitch is at noon and the game will not be televised.
