SAN DIEGO – Grand Canyon got a taste of its own medicine, losing 9-1 by run rule in a five-inning series finale Sunday at San Diego State.
The Lopes (43-6, 16-3) won each of the first two games of the series in five innings, so Sunday's result was an unexpected flip to say the least. GCU had not lost via run rule since the 2024 Los Angeles Regional at the hands of No. 6 UCLA. The loss was Grand Canyon's first conference road loss since March 16, 2024, at Seattle U.
GCU stranded the bases loaded in the top of the first and scored one run in the second thanks to a RBI single by senior center fielder
Sydney McCray. The GCU offense never got on base again, going 1-2-3 in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
The Aztecs (22-22, 7-12 MW) found their way on base early and often, scoring the brunt of their runs in the second inning, when they scored six and sprung out to a 7-1 lead.
Lopes sophomore left-hander
Oakley Vickers started in the circle, allowing five runs in 1 1/3 innings. Senior right-hander
Taryn Batterton entered in the second and only got one out before she was pulled following a walk, single and double that made her responsible for another two runs.
Freshman right-hander
Abi Jones almost made it two innings before she too was touched up for a two-run home run that extended the lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
McCray had two of the Lopes' three hits and earned her 29th stolen base this season, still without being caught.
Grand Canyon did not get any help from the rest of the Mountain West with Nevada and UNLV sweeping their series to pull within two games of conference leader GCUÂ with six games to go.
GCU and UNLV match up next weekend at GCU Softball Stadium for a massive series, when a Lopes series win can clinch a first-round bye in the Mountain West Championship.
