The Land of Enchantment has not proven to be kind to Grand Canyon this week, as the Lopes dropped their third straight in the state of New Mexico, tonight falling 12-2 to New Mexico State at Presley Askew Baseball Field in Las Cruces, N.M. GCU dropped two games to New Mexico earlier in the week.
GCU falls to 21-17 overall and 10-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Aggies improved to 5-28-1 and 2-10-1 in the league.
As has been the case in all three games this week, GCU was down early, tonight falling behind 5-0 in the first inning and 7-0 after four. The Aggies scored once in the seventh to close out the game due to the conference 10-run rule.
The first six batters reached via a walk or hit in the first inning against GCU starter
Coley Bruns (6-2), including a grand slam off the bat of Brent Hermanussen. Bruns would allow seven runs on 10 hits over 4.0 innings in taking the loss.
"It was a tough one tonight," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "It was uncharacteristic of Coley. He just couldn't find a rhythm. They strung together a few hits and then got that grand slam that got us behind."
GCU was able to knock out 10 hits on the night, but were only 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Thomas Lerouge and
Humberto Aranda each had two hits to lead the Antelopes.
"We did not do a great job offensively, especially with runners in scoring position," added Stankiewicz. "We gave away too many ABs when we had some chances to get back in it. It was not one of our better efforts. But give them credit; they outplayed us in every facet. The good thing about baseball is there is another game tomorrow. We will take a deep breath and refocus."
The Antelopes scored their runs on a
Chad De La Guerra sac fly in the fifth and sac fly by
Garrison Schwartz in the seventh.
GCU and the Aggies will be back at it for game two tomorrow with first pitch set to be thrown at 5 p.m. (AZ time). The matchup can be found on radio at KXXT 1010 AM (also via the KXXT TuneIn Radio App), the home of Antelope men's basketball and baseball. Live stats are available at www.gculopes.com.
