Grand Canyon redshirt-junior point guard
Courtney Hayes was selected to the Western Athletic Conference All-Defensive Team. The All-WAC teams were voted on by the eight league coaches and released by the conference Monday.
Hayes, who sat out the 2013-14 season after transferring from Louisiana Tech, was one of the league's strongest defensive rebounders. She averaged 4.9 per game, fourth in the league and 5.1 per game in WAC contests, ranking sixth. She was 11th in steals (1.6) in all games and 15th (1.3) in WAC games.
Along with being among the leaders in defensive categories, Hayes led the conference, in WAC games, in assists at 4.4 per contest and was second in all games at 4.6. She was third in assist/turnover ratio in league games at 1.5 and fourth at 1.2 in all games.
"Courtney is a solid on ball defender who anticipates well. She led our team in steals, was second in rebounding and led the team in defensive rebounds," said GCU coach Trent May. "She was a key part in our team being statistically the best defensive team in the conference."GCU led the league in scoring defense for the second straight year, giving up 58.7 points per game and 58.2 points in WAC games.
