Grand Canyon lost for the fifth-straight time, today falling 7-1 to UNLV at Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev.
The loss drops GCU to 11-10 overall, while the Rebels improved to 9-10. The Lopes beat the Rebels 7-0 on Feb. 17 in Phoenix.
Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, GCU was able to manufacture a run to tie the game on a pair of hit batters, a
Charles Wagner single and
Kai Kealoha fielder's choice RBI. From that point on, the Lopes would only get one more runner into scoring position, with that coming in the fifth inning.
GCU finished with just three hits on the afternoon.
The Rebels scored once in each of the first three innings and added four in the seventh to put the game away.
Zebastian Valenzuela made the start for the Antelopes, being charged with loss after allowing three runs on three hits over 2.0 innings.
Jake Repavich,
Mick Vorhof and
Travis Garcia-Perreira all saw action out of the pen. Repavich fanned four in 4.2 innings, but was touched for three runs (two earned) on three hits.
"We are struggling to score runs and our pitchers are trying to be too careful," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "We all need to take a deep breath and relex and play like we can. Jake continues to give us quality innings out of the bullpen. We look forward to getting back to Brazell Stadium this weekend."
Grand Canyon now returns home for five straight, beginning with their WAC opening series with North Dakota. The three-game set will begin on Friday, with games also on Saturday and Sunday. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Go to
