After being on the road for their last seven contests, the Grand Canyon University baseball team (12-10) returned to Brazell Stadium Friday, opening their Western Athletic Conference (WAC) schedule in style, as the Antelopes picked up a 13-3 seven-inning run-rule victory over North Dakota (5-11).
"It means a lot to get back home to Brazell and to just get back to your routine again," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "It's home for our guys and they love being here, it's where they feel comfortable."
After allowing a first inning home run,
Coley Bruns quickly found his groove, as the junior went the distance en route to picking up his third win of the year. Bruns fanned a career-high 11 UND batters, while issuing just two walks.
"Coley, despite the home run in the first inning, settled in nicely and did a great job getting us going on a Friday night," said Stankiewicz. "He got back to what he does and got outs when we needed them. It was good to see him take a deep breath and just get into a rhythm and back to doing what he does."
GCU's offense exploded with a four-run third and tacked on five more in the seventh to highlight the 13-run night.
Offensively, GCU received multi-hit games from
David Walker,
Chad De La Guerra,
Brandon Smith,
Garrison Schwartz,
Rouric Bridgewater and
Thomas Lerouge. Schwartz and Bridgewater each tallied three RBI in the conference opener.
"The guys put together a lot of quality at-bats up and down the lineup. It's not necessarily just about hits; it's about putting together good at-bats," added Stankiewicz. "We did that against a solid pitcher, which was good to see. The guys did an overall nice job offensively."
The Lopes will host North Dakota in game two of the three-game set Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Fans can visit
