Grand Canyon (9-12, 3-5) was outscored 21-11 in the final 7:44 and lost 65-60 to Bakersfield (16-7, 5-3), the preseason favorite in the Western Athletic Conference, at GCU Arena Saturday.
After two
Mikaehla Connor free throws gave GCU a 53-52 lead with 5:57 remaining, Bakersfield scored the next 10 points. During that run, the Lopes were 0-for-7 from the field and had two turnovers. GCU shot 21.4 percent (6-of-28) in the second half and 26.8 percent (15-of-56) for the game.

Hedrington led GCU with 14 points and nine rebounds. The Lopes won the battle of the boards against the taller 'Runners 49-42, but made more turnovers (21-14). GCU hit its first 14 free throws and finished 24-of-28 (85.7 percent).
Freshman
Casey Rarrick followed Hedrington in scoring with 13 points.
Astrea Reed and
Courtney Hayes each had eight. Reed was 8-of-8 at the line. Connor grabbed seven rebounds and
August Touchard had four assists and four steals.
Grand Canyon outscored Bakersfield 14-3 to end the first half to lead 34-24. The Lopes were aided by strong play off the bench, getting 14 points from subs.
Devyn Edwards and
Madison Craig each had six first-half points. The Lopes ended the first half on a 6-0 run. Though shooting only 32.1 percent (9-of-28) from the field, the Lopes took advantage of 13 Roadrunner fouls, hitting 12-of-12 from the free-throw line. GCU also dominated the boards, 29-17.
Bakersfield was led by preseason WAC Player of the Year Tyonna Outland with 17 points. Batabe Zempare had 11 points and 16 rebounds.
