Lopes Fall In Five At Quincy

After winning its first four away from home, Grand Canyon suffered its first road loss, 3-2 to Quincy at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill., Friday.
The Lopes dropped to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. Quincy is 8-6 and 2-4. Set scores were 23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 15-11. It was the Lopes third five-set loss of the season.
GCU had a strong performance off the bench from freshman outside hitter Shalev Saada. In four sets, Saada had 17 kills. He hit .467 on 30 tries with only three errors. Setter Michael Milstein, who played the final two sets, had 21 assists. Saada helped force the fifth set with nine kills in the fourth.
Libero Kyle Miller had a match-best 15 digs, six coming the fourth. Two other Lopes had double-digits in kills. Gerrard Lipscombe and Ryan Mather had 12 and 11, respectively. Mather added three service aces.
Middle hitter Christian Ward led GCU in the first set. He was part of five blocks, including one solo. He finished with eight total blocks.
Quincy won all the major statistical categories. The Hawks had more kills (63-49), blocks (13-11), digs (53-44) and service aces (6-3) and less service errors (15-17). Quincy hit .279 to GCU's .200.
"Give Quincy credit," said GCU coach Jeremy Price. "They played really well and their serving kept the pressure on us. We'll have to pass and serve better Saturday."
The teams meet again in Pepsi Arena Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. Fans can follow the match with links available at www.gculopes.com.
