Grand Canyon's season opening winning streak continued tonight with a 10-4 win over Cal Poly at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
GCU is now 5-0 this season with two wins over 2014 NCAA Tournament teams (CP and UNLV). Cal Poly falls to 1-4.
"This is a good win for sure against a Cal Poly team that is very good," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "Anytime you can go on the road and win on Friday night against a team that has been historically good is something we hope to build on."
Cal Poly jumped out to 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second. GCU sliced the lead in half on a
Paul Panaccione RBI single in the third that scored
Thomas Lerouge.
Trailing 3-1, the Antelopes plated four runs in the decisive fifth inning, taking a lead they would not relinquish. Panaccione, who finished with three hits on the night, lined a two RBI single to center that highlighted the scoring. The Lopes also plated runs on a fielder's choice and Cal Poly throwing error.
GCU scored two more in the seventh, one coming on a throwing error and the other on a
Garrison Schwartz RBI single. Schwartz would collect two-more RBI with a single in the ninth.
"Panaccione had some big hits tonight that kept us in the game early," said Stankiewicz. "I'm encouraged by what he has done for us lately. Schwartz also did a nice job and had some nice hits including one late that helped put this one away."
Andrew Naderer started and recorded his second win in as many starts. He went 5.0 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. He fanned six while walking two.
"Andrew pitched well enough to keep us in it," added Stankiewicz. "He was very competive tonight and fought through some tough situations. We are encouraged by his start, but feel there is a lot more in the tank for him."
Ruben Rincon,
Travis Garcia-Perreira and
Zebastian Valenzuela combined to toss 4.0 shutout innings in relief.
"One of the keys tonight was our bullpen," said Stankiewicz. "They all did a real nice job and made some big pitches when they had too. They were able to hold down a strong offensive team in their home ballpark tonight."
Grand Canyon and Cal Poly will play game two of this three-game set, tomorrow at 7 p.m. (Arizona time). Go to
