Grand Canyon (3-0) wrapped up a perfect opening weekend of the 2015 season with a commanding 30-7 victory over Bradley (2-1) at Brazell Stadium Sunday in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Antelopes' 30 runs is the most in a game since Grand Canyon defeated Denver University 45-15 on May 6, 1988—a game in which the Lopes had 30 hits. GCU used 28 hits today to pick up its third victory of the year in the final day of the GCU Classic. The last time GCU had as many as 28 hits in a game was when Canyon collected 30 hits in a 23-20 win over Western Carolina during the 1993 season.

"It's one of those days you just show and go with no soft toss or BP and the guys just really had some quality at-bats all the way down the lineup," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "De La Guerra is a heck of a hitter and he was able to push that gap and get some big hits and he kind of all of a sudden got us going. The game is so contagious like that at times."
Chad De La Guerra had a banner day, as the senior went 5-for-6 with a pair of home runs at the plate, becoming the first player to record a multi-home run game since P.J. Garcia did so against Colorado Mesa on Feb. 4, 2012. The reigning WAC batting champion also collected nine RBI and scored five times Sunday. His nine RBI are two short of the school record and his five hits and five runs are each one shy of tying the school record.
The Lopes scored in every inning except the eighth, tallying six runs in the sixth, while putting up five runs in the first and fourth.
Charles Wagner and
Jayden Eggimann highlighted the six-run sixth inning, hitting back-to-back home runs. Eggiman's solo shot came in his first-career collegiate at-bat.
Brandon Smith, Wagner,
Garrison Schwartz and
Thomas Lerouge all notched three hits apiece to contribute to GCU's offensive effort. Shortstop
Paul Panaccione came around to score five runs and recorded three RBI.
In his first start in a GCU uniform,
Cameron Brendel picked up the win on the mound, giving up just one earned run in five innings of work. Freshman
Mick Vorhof entered in the sixth in relief of Brendel and looked sharp, fanning five in two innings.
Travis Garcia-Perreira and
Josh Walker each threw an inning of scoreless ball to close out the game, combining to not allow a Bradley hit in the final two innings.
"He (Cameron Brendel) did a nice job in his first time out, he settled in really well and we gave him some runs and he was able to find his groove," said Stankiewicz.
"This is a great weekend and a really good start," concluded Stankiewicz. "We will take tomorrow off and let the guys rest and catch-up on schoolwork before UNLV comes into town Tuesday. They are really good and everyone knows that, so it should be a really exciting night for us," concluded Stankiewicz.
GCU will take a day off before welcoming UNLV to Brazell Stadium on Tuesday night, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Cox7 (streamed at www.cox7.com) and can be heard on radio on KXXT 1010 AM Family Values Radio (also available on the KXXT TuneIn Radio app).
