PHOENIX – To close out the season, the Grand Canyon men's soccer team faced UNLV at home to honor its seven seniors:
Alberto Sanchez Garcia,
Bojan Jovanovic,
Jesus Leyva,
Luca Licciardi,
Tafadzwa Semwayo,
Ricardo Tavarez and
Amare Thomas. The Antelopes fell behind early and were not able to recover as the fell to the Rebels 4-0.Â
Â
"I am proud of the way our guys fought until the very end," head coach Schellas Hyndman said. "It is frustrating because I do not think the score reflects the way we played tonight. I am pleased with our seniors leaving everything on the field."
Â
Every senior played for Hyndman in the final game of the season as the seven were honored in the pre-match festivities with friends and family.
The match started out slow as both teams struggled to find a rhythm offensively. A shot on goal was not attempted until 13 minutes into the game, coming from GCU's Tavarez off a free kick but Richard Garness was able to come up with a save. It was a physical first half as the teams combined for 22 fouls and despite just three shots on goal, UNLV was able to take the lead in the middle of the first half. WAC leading scorer, Danny Musovski, would score his 13th goal of the season in the 31st minute to go into halftime with the 1-0 lead over GCU.In the second half UNLV was able to control possession and dictate the pace of play scoring three second half goals, for their 11
th win of the season. Despite the lost, GCU surpasses last year's win total by two games including three victories in conference.
Â
"We are graduating some great men that contributed a lot to this university," Hyndman said. "I am excited about the players we brought in and the players we are recruiting. If we continue this process then we have the chance to be very successful here at Grand Canyon."
Â
GCU ends the season with a 7-10-0 record and 3-7-0 in the WAC.Â
