PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon University women's volleyball team will go on their last road trip of the season this week to take on UTRGV and New Mexico State.
Last week, the Lopes went 0-2 at home against Utah Valley and Seattle U.
While facing the Wolverines, GCU came out strong in the opening two sets, having a narrow 25-22 loss in the first set, before coming back for a 29-27 win in the second. Utah Valley won the final two sets 25-20.
Grand Canyon was led by
Natalie Tardy's 11 kills. She had a .324 hitting percentage off of 37 attempts. Coming off the bench to provide a spark for GCU,
Melody Horton tallied an additional 11 kills.
Randahl Powers had 29 assists, while
Haley Glass had 18 digs. The team had 11 service aces during the match, four of which were earned by Glass.
Against Seattle U, the squad fell in three sets.
Megan Byrnes picked up 11 kills and four block assists, while
Gracie Dimond also had four block assists. Glass picked up another 13 digs.
Scouting UTRGVIn their three-set victory to Chicago State, Bojana Mitrovic had 12 kills, followed closely by Haley Durham's 11 kills and Alisha Watson's 10 kills. Dubravka Vukoja tallied 32 assists during the match. She averages 9.96 assists per set and is currently ranked third in the WAC. Fatoumata Dacosta had 15 digs during the match.
While facing UMKC, UTRGV fell in a four set match. Their strongest set was the opening set where they recorded a .394 hitting percentage as a team. Mitrovic totaled another 20 kills. She is ranked second in kills per set (4.21) in conference play for her efforts at the net. Vukoja had 46 assists.
Scouting New Mexico StateThe Aggies lead the WAC with a perfect 10-0 record and overall record of 21-5. They won matches over UMKC and Chicago State last week.
Against the 'Roos, Gwen Murphy led with 15 kills and a .500 hitting percentage in the four-set victory. She also earned five block assists. As a team, they collect 16 block assists and two solo blocks for a total of 10. Brianna Ainsworth had 25 assists and Taylor Livoti had 24.
In their match against Chicago State, they won the match in three sets with 15 players contributing to the effort. Nathali Castellanos had 11 kills, followed by Murphy's 10 kills to lead the team offensively. Livoti had another 20 assists.
