EDINBURG, Tex. – The Grand Canyon University women's volleyball team (4-19, 2-9) fell in a three-set match against UTRGV (10-16, 3-8) today at UTRGV Fieldhouse.
The Vaqueros took the opening set 25-13, but the Lopes made a comeback in the second set for a narrow 25-23 loss. UTRGV took the final set 25-22.
Jordyn Sanchez earned a .364 hitting percentage to lead GCU with eight kills with no errors. She also tallied 15 digs.
Hannah Hicks snagged three block assists and one solo block at the net, contributing to the squad's six team blocks.
"Jordyn did a great job tonight all-around of battling, swinging hard and creating opportunities to score points," said head coach Kris Naber. "I like the adjustments Hannah made during the week with her block and she started seeing some success tonight at slowing balls down which will create offensive opportunities for us."
Randahl Powers tallied 16 assists during the match. She is ranked seventh in conference for assists per set in WAC competition, averaging 6.67.
"We've already started looking at ways to improve on our side as we head to New Mexico tomorrow to face New Mexico State," concluded Naber.
To round out the last match on their road trip, the team will travel to Las Cruces to take on the WAC-leading Aggies on Saturday at 1 p.m. A full recap will be available at
