PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon University women's volleyball team (5-20, 3-10) defeated Chicago State (1-26, 0-12) in three sets tonight in Antelope Gymnasium.
GCU picked up a decisive 25-15 win in the opening set. The Cougars fought back in the second, but the Lopes were still able to grab a 26-24 victory before closing out the match 25-19.
Natalie Tardy led the squad with 12 kills off of 25 attempts (.320) with
Megan Byrnes also having a strong night with 10 kills and 24 attempts (.375).
The Lopes outblocked Chicago State in team blocks 9-2, having a total of 16 block assists and one solo block.
Gracie Dimond had the lone solo block as well as two block assists, while
Hannah Hicks led overall with six block assists.
Melody Horton also had four blocks in addition to nine kills.
Competing as the libero,
Emily Vitel had 24 digs in the match.
Randahl Powers had 23 assists to give her a total of 273 this season. In conference matches, she averages 6.60 per set, ranking her among the conference's top-ten.
Michelle Steagall also earned 14 assists.
As a team, their strongest set was the first with a .353 hitting percentage. They tallied 41 kills off of 111 attempts for a .243 match average.
