OREM, Utah – The Grand Canyon University women's volleyball team (2-13, 0-3) was defeated by Utah Valley (7-9, 3-1) today in a four-set match.
After losing the opening set 25-12, the Lopes made a strong comeback in the second to win 25-19. The Wolverines answered by winning sets three and four 25-15 and 25-20, respectively.
In the second set, GCU earned 13 kills, 12 assists, and 18 digs.
"We showed resilience in the second set and battled back after the first set," said head coach Kris Naber. "But we couldn't sustain the momentum. We need to expect more out of ourselves and not be okay just winning one set in a match."
Highlight the game was
Jordyn Sanchez's 17 kills on 29 attempts with only four errors (.333). This brought her season total to 128 kills.
Michelle Steagall earned another 26 assists and
Emily Vitel led with 10 digs.
"Jordyn played a solid game offensively," explained Naber. "She scored points and that's what we need in that outside position. We didn't have anyone else that really stepped up offensively and it's tough to win with only one person with double digit kills."
The Lopes will continue their season at home next week against New Mexico State on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. and against the newly minted UTRGV on Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played in Antelope Gymnasium.
