The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team (12-10, 3-2 WAC) built an early lead and never looked back in a 78-57 win over visiting Missouri-Kansas City (8-14, 3-2 WAC) tonight at GCU Arena.
The Antelopes were led by a trio of players who scored in double figures, including two who picked up double-doubles:
Joshua Braun with 20 points and a career-high 10 rebounds and
Daniel Alexander with a season-high-tying 19 points and 10 rebounds.
De'Andre Davis added 12 points.
Alexander and Davis sparked a GCU bench that scored half of the team's points in tonight's game, as
Ryan Majerle contributed to that total with eight points.
GCU shot 51.1 percent (24-for-47) from the floor, including an impressive 9-for-16 (56.3 percent) from beyond the three-point line. The Kangaroos shot 40.4 percent (21-for-52).
The Lopes held the 26-20 advantage in points in the paint and 28-11 in second chance points, and outrebounded the 'Roos 41-25.
GCU led the entire game, and started to pull away in the first half as they built a nine-point advantage (24-15) at the 7:36 mark following an 8-0 run that spanned nearly four minutes. The Lopes went ahead by 20 points, 43-23, via a 10-0 run over the final three minutes of the half, carrying that advantage into the locker room at the break.
It was the fourth time this season that GCU has allowed 25 or fewer points to the opposition in the first half. The Lopes shot 53.3 percent (16-for-30) over the first 20 minutes, led by Braun with 14 points. Alexander added 12 points for GCU, who limited the 'Roos to an 8-for-24 mark (33.3 percent) in the first half.
Following two
Jerome Garrison free throws with eight minutes to play in the second half, GCU found themselves ahead by 28 points (68-40), their largest lead in a game this season. The Lopes held UMKC scoreless for the last two minutes, 36 seconds of the game after the 'Roos had closed the gap to 15 points.
The Lopes return to GCU Arena for a 7 p.m. meeting with Chicago State on Saturday night at GCU Arena. Fans can follow the action live by tuning in to KXXT 1010 AM Family Values Radio or Cox7.
