Grand Canyon (11-10, 2-2) returns home to GCU Arena to take on Kansas City (8-13, 3-1) tonight at 7 p.m. The Antelopes are looking to snap a two-game losing streak, while the Kangaroos have won three straight. The contest can be heard on radio on KXXT 1010 AM (also via the KXXT "TuneIn Radio" App), with GCU Alum Michael Potter calling the action alongside 'The Coach", Dan Nichols. KANSAS CITYThis marks the fifth meeting between GCU and Kansas City with the Lopes holding the 3-1 lead in the all-time series. GCU split the two-game Western Athletic Conference series last season, winning 72-53 on the road before falling 85-80 at home later in the year.
LAST TIME OUTGCU lost a heartbreaking 73-72 game to Texas-Pan American on Jan. 24 in Edinburg, Tex. The Lopes trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half before taking a 72-70 lead with 12 seconds left. A Broncs free throw and layup sealed the victory for UTPA. Joshua Braun led GCU with a career-high 25 points and seven rebounds, while DeWayne Russell added 15 points. The Lopes drained a season-high 11 three-pointers in the game.
LOPES FOR THREE!GCU made a season-high 11 three-pointers on Jan. 24 at UTPA and have shot over 40.0 percent from beyond the arc seven times, including a season-best 53.8 percent (7-for-13) in their 71-69 win over UC Riverside on Jan. 4. GCU's 128 three-pointers so far this season rank third among all WAC teams.
RUSSELL GETTING IT DONEDeWayne Russell is averaging 17.1 points in 12 games since making his GCU debut on Dec. 13 at Indiana. He has scored a GCU-best 24 points twice: Jan. 10 versus Bakersfield and Jan. 15 at Utah Valley. Russell has also scored in double figures in each of his 12 games, recording a similar 12-game stretch as a freshman at Northern Arizona. Russell dished out a collegiate-best eight assists in the WAC opener against the Roadrunners and ranks second on the team with 44 assists. He is shooting nearly 50.0 percent from the floor and is averaging a team-high 34.4 minutes per game.
