Grand Canyon (11-8, 2-0) returns to action Thursday, Jan. 22, when they face New Mexico State (10-10, 2-1) at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Aggies were selected as the preseason favorites by both the conference coaches and media. The game will have many ways for fans to follow including the following television options - Fox Sports Arizona, Fox College Sports Pacific and Altitude. VS. NEW MEXICO STATEThis marks the fourth meeting between GCU and New Mexico State, with the Aggies holding the 3-0 lead in the all-time series. NMSU swept the two-game series last season and won the Western Athletic Conference tournament to earn a bid into the NCAA Tournament.
LAST TIME OUTGCU remained the only unbeaten team in the Western Athletic Conference with their 83-74 victory over Utah Valley on Jan. 15 in Orem. DeWayne Russell paced the Antelopes with 24 points, while Jerome Garrison added 20 and seven rebounds. Daniel Alexander added a career-best 11 rebounds to go along with 15 points off the bench. GCU outscored the Wolverines 48-39 over the final 20 minutes to break a 35-all tie at halftime.
LOPES FOR THREE!GCU has made a season-high nine three-pointers in three games this season and have shot over 40.0 percent from beyond the arc six times, including a season-best 53.8 percent (7-for-13) in their 71-69 win over UC Riverside on Jan. 4. GCU's 112 three-pointers so far this season rank third among all WAC teams.
SHARING THE BALLGCU's 231 assists through 19 games is the third-most among WAC teams this season as they are averaging 12.2 assists per game. Royce Woolridge has 52 assists on the season, just 12 shy of matching Jerome Garrison and Daniel Alexander's team-leading total from 2013-14. The Lopes have dished out a season-high 19 assists three times this season, most recently on Jan. 15 at Utah Valley.
RUSSELL GETTING IT DONEDeWayne Russell is averaging 17.2 points in 10 games since making his GCU debut on Dec. 13 at Indiana. He has scored a GCU-best 24 points twice: Jan. 10 versus Bakersfield and Jan. 15 at Utah Valley. Russell has also scored in double figures in each of his 10 games, recording a similar 12-game stretch as a freshman at Northern Arizona. Russell dished out a collegiate-best eight assists in the WAC opener against the Roadrunners and is second on the team with 34 assists. He is shooting 50.0 percent from the floor and is averaging 33.3 minutes per game.
RUSSELL HAS HANDLESDeWayne Russell has not committed a turnover in his past two games, spanning just over 69 minutes. He last turned the ball over with 1:06 remaining in the second half against UC Riverside on Jan. 10 and has played 68 minutes over the last two games, picking up 12 assists in that time.
