Grand Canyon came back from a 16-point first-half deficit to take a late second-half lead, but Utah Valley's Georgia Agnew scored on a lay-up and added a free-throw with 16 seconds left to give the Wolverines a 52-50 victory over the Antelopes at the PE Building in Orem, Utah, Saturday.
The Antelopes missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer.
GCU (6-9, 0-2) had a pair of second-half leads. A three-pointer from sophomore
Astrea Reed at the 4:03 mark gave the Lopes a 48-46 advantage. A jumper from
Courtney Hayes with 1:36 to go gave GCU a 50-49 lead. The Reed trey ended an 18-3 run. Reed and
Jessica Gajewski, who tied her career-high with a game-high 18 points, each had two three-pointers during the outburst.
Reed went 3-of-3 from the field and scored eight points. She also had three rebounds. Gajewski added five boards and two assists, both tied career highs. Hayes scored seven and had a game-best six assists along with four rebounds.
Cheyenne Hedrington had eight points and shared game-high honors with a team-best six rebounds.
"We did a lot of things in the second half to give us a shot at winning," said GCU coach Trent May. "They were not really big things, just the basics needed in competing to our standards and winning ways. I'm really proud of the fight to get back in the game."
The Lopes shot 56 percent (14-of-25) in the second half and helped hold the Wolverines to only 28 percent (7-of-25) accuracy.
Utah Valley improved to 7-10 and 1-1 in the WAC.
The Lopes return home for two games at GCU Arena next week against WAC co-leaders New Mexico State and Texas-Pan American. Both teams are 3-0 in league play.
