Grand Canyon ran into a hot-shooting New Mexico State club and lost its Western Athletic Conference home opener to the co-leading Aggies 74-62 at GCU Arena Thursday.
The Lopes (6-10, 0-3) shot well early -- making seven of their first 12 shots – but hit only one of their last 12 first-half attempts and trailed 40-25 at the break. The Aggies shot 50 percent in each half and were 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from three-point range. Six of the treys came in the first 20 minutes.
While the Lopes cooled off, New Mexico State (11-6, 4-0) went on a 14-2 run to end the half. The Lopes never gave up in the second half. They hit three straight shots in the first two minutes of the second, including a three-pointer from
August Touchard, but the Aggies were nearly matching the execution and GCU was only able to knock the deficit down to 12.
GCU redshirt-freshman
Jessica Gajewski hit her first four shot attempts and tied her career-high with 18 points. It was her fifth straight double-figure game. During the five-game stretch, she is averaging 16.4 points per game. Three Lopes scored in double figures.
Courtney Hayes had 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. Touchard added 10 points and tied a career-high with five assists.
Cheyenne Hedrington had 10 rebounds, eight points and two assists.
Casey Rarrick added eight points.
GCU out-rebounded New Mexico State 39-33 and had 18 offensive rebounds.
