Grand Canyon's women's basketball team dropped the Western Athletic Conference opener, 90-67, to host Bakersfield at Icardo Center Saturday.
The Antelopes are 6-8 overall and 0-1 in the WAC. Bakersfield is 12-4 and 1-0.
"There are some days when not much goes your way and it really went their way today," said GCU coach Trent May. "We competed, but couldn't find rhythm to sustain their outside shooting. Hitting shots is part of execution and they executed really well. We will get better from this and get back to work for our next game."
GCU led by seven, 14-7, in the first half. The Lopes hit four three-pointers early, two from
Madison Craig and one each from
Jessica Gajewski and
Cheyenne Hedrington. Tied, 17-17, the Roadrunners went on a 10-0 run and led the rest of the way.
Bakersfield shot 50 percent (32-of-64) from the field, including 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from three-point range. The 'Runners had 26 assists. The Lopes outrebounded Bakersfield 36-35.
Gajewski led GCU with 14 points. Off the bench,
Tori Morris scored 10. She was 5-of-6 from the field.
Courtney Hayes had six points and team highs in rebounds (five) and assists (four).
Casey Rarrick scored nine points and Craig added eight. Twelve of 13 players that played got in the scoring column and all 13 had at least one rebound. GCU outscored Bakersfield on second-chance points 14-11. The Lopes shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the field, including 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from three-point range.
Tyonna Outland led Bakersfield with 20 points.
