Grand Canyon dropped to 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference with a 3-0 loss on the road and two-time defending WAC champion New Mexico State (7-5, 1-0) in Las Cruces, N.M., Thursday.
GCU (11-4, 1-1) lost by set scores of 25-20, 25-10, 25-17.
"New Mexico State is a very good, disciplined team and give credit to them," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "We created opportunities to take the first set, but we also created opportunities for them forcing things and making errors."
Shannon Dugan had a team-best eight kills. Libero
Mackenzie Phelps had 14 digs. Middle blocker
Hannah Hankins had four block assists and two service aces.
After a first-set GCU timeout, the Antelopes went on a 4-0 run to get within 18-17. The Lopes did it with four kills, two from Dugan and one each from
Megan Byrnes and
Hannah Hicks. Another Dugan kill cut it to 19-18. An Aggies service error got GCU within 20-19, but a Hankins kill was the only other point for the Lopes.
In the second, GCU got down 7-1 and were never able to get back in the set. In the third, the Lopes had a late rally, aided by a Hankins kill and Byrnes-Hankins combo block, but could not get over the hump to force a fourth.
"We've proven that we're fighters and competitors," added Naber. "We didn't do that well tonight. Our challenge Saturday is to regain our fight and competitiveness."
The match was the first of two on a WAC road trip. The Antelopes travel to Edinburg, Tex., and take on Texas-Pan American Saturday at 10 a.m. Arizona Time. Live links will be available for the match at
