In front of a large and loud crowd at Antelope Gymnasium Saturday, GCU's women's volleyball team prepped for next weekend's regular-season opener with the annual Purple-Black Alumni Match.
The band, cheerleaders, dance team and enthusiastic fans were entertained with a five-set match that included one intrasquad set, a head-to-head set between alums and a three-set match between the 2014 team and talented group of former GCU standouts.
"Our spirit section with the band, cheerleaders, dance team and our loyal fans make this a fun place to be," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "They brought excitement to an already fast-paced and exciting game."
The current team beat the alums 3-0, winning sets 25-14, 25-9, 15-13. In the intrasquad set, Black, which included seniors
Mackenzie Phelps and
Shannon Dugan teamed with freshmen
Hannah Hicks and
Randahl Powers and sophomores
Michelle Steagall and
Megan Byrnes, beat Purple 25-20.
Against the alums, GCU opened with Hicks and
Hannah Hankins in the middle with Byrnes, Dugan and
Natalie Tardy on the outside.
Leigh Stonerook was the setter and Phelps was at libero.
"We showed tonight what we've been showing since we started practicing. We're about being aggressive," said Naber. "Even if we make mistakes we always want to be aggressive."
It's the start of Naber's 20th year as a head coach, a former GCU player herself, "This is always a special night. Some of the girls here tonight go back 25 years with the program. There was a lot of Canyon Pride in the gym tonight and I think this year's group is going to carry on that tradition."
GCU opens the regular season at the Texas Southern Invitational in Houston on Aug. 29. The Antelopes take on Prairie View at 1 p.m. and host TSU at 3 p.m.
The Antelopes play two exhibition matches at GCU Arena Sept. 2-3 against Mount Royal, from Canada. Both contests start at 6 p.m.
