With wins over Prairie View A&M and host Texas Southern, Grand Canyon opened the 2014 women's volleyball season with a pair of wins at the Texas Southern Invitational in Houston, Friday.
The Antelopes started the day with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-21) win over Prairie View and followed with a second 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-16) shutout against the Tigers.
After a first-set struggle, GCU dominated the Panthers in the second and third set. Senior

Natalie Tardy had eight and seven kills, respectively, and the Lopes hit .333 as a team to take a 2-0 lead. Dugan and Tardy had 16 kills each for the match.
In her initial college contest, Tardy hit .314 (16-5-35) and added nine digs. Dugan hit .268 (16-5-41). In her first GCU match, sophomore setter
Leigh Stonerook had 30 assists and eight digs. Sophomore middle blocker
Hannah Hankins had a match-best three blocks to go with five kills. Senior libero
Mackenzie Phelps led all in digs with 11.
Tardy, the first-year player from Scottsdale Horizon High School, had a match-best 17 kills in the win over Texas Southern. Dugan added 13. Frosh middle blocker
Hannah Hicks had a team-best four blocks with one solo to go with four kills. Stonerook had a match-best 33 assists, while Phelps, again, led all in digs with 11. Freshman defensive specialist
Emily Vitel came off the bench to add six digs.
The Antelopes defense dominated the second set by holding the Tigers to a -.069 hitting percentage, while the offensive picked it up a notch by hitting .346 in the third. Tardy had seven of GCU's 13 third-set kills.
GCU looks to go 3-0 in the invitational with its final match Saturday at 11 a.m. (Arizona time) against New Orleans.
