The Grand Canyon University baseball team (22-17, 11-5 WAC) withstood a New Mexico State (16-21, 7-6 WAC) ninth-inning rally to win their third straight game, this time a 6-3 victory over the Aggies at Brazell Stadium. Tonight's win pushes the Antelopes' home record to 12-3.

GCU was in control of the game after breaking a 1-1 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and adding an insurance run in the seventh. However, the Aggies scored twice and had the tying run at bat in the ninth before a groundout to second base put an end to the game.
"We take the game for granted sometimes," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "As a young team, we have to get our guys to understand that you have to play a full nine innings. We didn't do that tonight, and that was frustrating. They came back and they are aggressive. Hopefully we learned our lesson today that we have to play a full game and do not need that drama in the ninth."
Starter
Andrew Naderer collected a season-best eight strikeouts for the second consecutive game en route to improving to 6-3 overall. He allowed just one run on three hits and three walks over 8.0 strong innings of work.
"Tonight's game was really all Andrew," added Stankiewicz. "He gave up a run in the first inning, but then pitched a great game. And we needed that tonight. He's got a chance to be very good."
Kyle Detwiler was tagged with two runs in the ninth inning, although both were unearned.
Malcolm Purdy entered with runners on first and second with two outs and induced that final groundout to pick up his second save of the season.
David Walker,
Chad De La Guerra, and
Michael Pomeroy each collected two hits in the win, while Walker reached base in four of his five plate appearances after also drawing two walks.
Ben Mauseth and
Brian Kraft plated two runs apiece, while
Josh Meyer and
Matt Haggerty also picked up an RBI.
The Aggies got on the board first after putting their first two runners on base to open the game, but Naderer allowed just one run after retiring the next three batters he faced.
In the bottom half of the frame, GCU responded after Walker singled to shortstop and one out later moved to third on a single to right field off the bat of De La Guerra. Meyer's sacrifice fly to right field plated Walker and knotted the score at one apiece.
After trading zeroes over the next two frames, the Lopes loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the fourth and took advantage of the opportunity, scoring four runs to stake a 5-1 lead. Haggerty drew a bases loaded walk to score Meyer and was followed by a sacrifice fly by Kraft to plate Pomeroy. After
Paul Panaccione and Walker reached to once again load the bases, Mauseth hit a single into left-centerfield to add two more runs to GCU's total in the frame.
Kraft made it a five-run game (6-1) with his second sacrifice fly of the contest, again to left field to allow Pomeroy to cross home plate.
The Aggies made things interesting in the top of the ninth despite having two outs on the board. Two batters reached via back-to-back errors, both of which came around to score on back-to-back singles. However, Purdy induced a groundout to the lone batter he faced to end the threat and secure the victory.
"We will take the win and go home, get some rest, and come back tomorrow ready to play a full nine innings," Stankiewicz said.
The series continues tomorrow with game time slated for 6:30 p.m. at Brazell Stadium. The game can be heard live on Independent Talk 1100 AM KFNX (online at
