It took overtime to do it, but the Grand Canyon University men's basketball team completed their inaugural season in Division I with a thrilling 79-78 win over Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, TX.
The win improves GCU's overall record to 15-14 and 10-6 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Antelopes finish in sole possession of third in the WAC, after being picked eighth by the coaches and ninth by the media in the preseason poll. UTPA fell to 9-22, 5-11 in the WAC.

Canyon used seven made free throws, a
Daniel Alexander 3-pointer and bucket by
Killian Larson in overtime to earn the win.
Jerome Garrison opened the scoring in the overtime with two free throws to put GCU up 69-67. Moments later a driving layup by the Broncs' Josh Cleveland tied the score at 69. Both teams then exchanged 3's, GCU's from Alexander with 3:25 left, which saw the game knotted at 72.
Larson finished off a three-point play with 1:42 on the clock that gave GCU a 75-72 lead that they would not relinquish. UTPA had one final shot at the buzzer, but it fell short, ending the contest.
Larson led the Antelopes with 29 points and 16 rebounds, his 20
th double-double of the season.
GCU had a chance to wrap it up in the second half, pushing open a six-point lead at 62-56 with 4:01 left in the second half. The Broncs continued to crawl back and used a Justin Leathers 3-pointer to tie the game with 3.9 seconds left. Alexander had a nice look for the win, just missing from the 3-point stripe.
For the second-straight game,
Jeremy Adams finished with a career-best 14 points. He fouled out late in the second half. Alexander finished with 14 on four 3's. Garrison added 12.
The first half was played to draw after both teams shot a combined 15-for-51 (GCU was 7-for-27) in the opening half. The Broncs started quickly scoring the first nine points of the game, answered by eight straight from the 'Lopes. The Broncs opened up leads of 16-10 and 19-14 before a 6-0 GCU run gave them their first lead of the game at 20-19 with 4:19 left in the half. The two traded the lead three more times before settling into the half at 23 apiece.
