The gym looked a little different, but the results were the same.
Grand Canyon returned to Antelope Gymnasium for the first time since 2011, when it had its greatest season in history, and defeated New Mexico State 66-56 to win its 20th game of the season and improve to 9-6 in the Western Athletic Conference.
In 2011, GCU went 29-3, advanced to the Sweet 16 and was 14-0 at Antelope Gym.
With construction underway at GCU Arena, the women's basketball team will play its final two games in the gym, including Saturday's regular-season finale with Texas-Pan American. A Senior Day celebration will take place prior to the 2 p.m. tipoff.
Against the Aggies (10-19, 7-9), GCU led the entire way.
Justine Johnson, who tied a career-high with 21 points, scored GCU's first eight. She was 8-for-12 from the field, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range.
Deanna Daniels also had 21 to go with eight rebounds.
"I'm really proud of our girls," said GCU coach Trent May. "It was a different environment that they weren't accustomed to. During their week of preparation they did a great job not worrying about anything but finding a way to finish the regular season on a high note."
It is the fourth time in a row GCU has won 20 in a season.
"It's one of those things, as a coach, you don't want to put a premium on a number because No. 21 is still out there," said May. "To win 20 games in our first season, I don't think a person in this building thought that was possible."
Senior
Jasmine Grayson sparked the 'Lopes off the bench with seven points and six rebounds.
Kaitlyn Petersen had seven points and seven rebounds.
Johnna Brown had six points and eight boards.
Jenna Pearson had a career-high five assists.
GCU's defense helped hold New Mexico State to just eight percent shooting from 3-point range (2-for-25). "We did a really good job of knowing where their shooters were," said May.
Eight senior players, Brown, Daniels, Grayson, Johnson,
Judy Jones,
Asha McDonnell,
Erica Paskell and Pearson, along with manager John Zetino will be honored prior to Saturday's tip-off.
